Summary;

Seventeen year old Lisa Brown’s life is falling apart. First, her mother and father divorce, then their house forecloses and now, her mother has decided to commit herself to a psychiatric hospital.

If that weren’t enough, she must leave sunny south Florida to attend a boarding school full of geniuses in cold, Lynn, Massachusetts. The city where the locals chant “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin; you never come out the way you went in.”

And, they aren’t kidding. Lisa must live in a tiny shack with two strange teenagers, a dog named Pig who growls when you look at him and a cat named Rat. “Mind the cat,” everyone says. What the heck is wrong with this place?

Lisa thinks she’s landed in her own house of horrors with the anti-social Alex and his facetious sister Ally. But, the real drama begins the day she is struck by lightning…

Excerpt 3:
We drove along the dirt road and turned onto the main highway. Alex and Ally stared out the window intently. “Look at this place,” Alex sighed. “It’s so different.”
Ally said nothing.
“So, how old are you, Alex?” Amber asked. She looked at him in the rear view mirror.
“Eighteen, I guess.”
My mom turned into a Denny’s and parked. “You guess?”
Alex nodded.
We took a table close to the door. It wasn’t crowded inside the restaurant which seemed to ease the tension a little.
“So, what happened at the ‘you know what’?” I smiled, swallowing. Amber avoided my eyes. She didn’t go to the psychiatric hospital. But, who was I to judge her? If she wanted to lie to me then that was okay. “Did they help you?”
“She didn’t go,” Alex answered. “She never had any intention to really go.”
Amber’s lip quivered. Why did Alex have to be so cruel? Couldn’t he just let my mother lie to me?
“It’s okay, mom. I’m just happy you’re here.” I grabbed her hand. She squeezed me back hard. “Alex can be a little blunt sometimes. I don’t think he means anything by it, though. Millie considers them geniuses.”
My mom placed her hand on Alex’s arm.
She was going to tell him it was okay; that she understood and he hadn’t offended her. The truth was always the best policy. Yes, that is what my mother would’ve said for sure…
Alex screamed and smacked her hand away. He stood and picked up his chair. His face burned red and I could see one of his veins popping out on his forehead. He lifted the chair above his head, as if he were going to hurl it at my mother.
“Alex!” I yelled. “What are you doing?”
He looked into my eyes. His chair found its place on the floor again and he sat.
My heart pumped and my skin itched. What a lunatic. “Mom, don’t touch Alex, he doesn’t like it.”
My mother sat frozen at the table. “Uh, I can see that.”
Alex nodded and scooted back to the table.
Our waitress inched her way over with a look of horror on her face. “I-Is everything all right here?”

Ally smiled. “Yes, of course. We’re just very hungry.”

Guest Post-How did this story originate?

I had a strange dream that consisted of Lightning, a large boarding school, Ally and Alex, a rat with red eyes and a pig in a baby basket.
I went to work and started drawing the area that I dreamed about. The owner’s father came over and was like, “What’s that?” I explained to him what I saw and he said, “Ah, Lynn, Lynn, the City of Sin. You Never Come Out the Way You Went In.”
From that phrase, the entire series developed!

News! OUP edition

Februrary already... What have I done with my life in the start of January? Not much...oops. I did some things though. Friday-that was good. The wonderful Charlie invited me to the OUP night called Storm Your Imagination. It was for Joss Stirling' s Storm and Stone and Nikki Sheehan 's Who Framed Klaris Cliff. It was held at the 1901 Arts Club, which is an amazing venue-small, cosy, and just the right size for us all.  Also warm-a big plus when it's tipping it down. We had talks from both Joss, about detectives and Nikki, about imaginary friends. Both made their books, well the research behind them, seem fascinating and I'm looking forwards to reading both of those things. OUP provided Siege and Storm, and Who Framed Klaris Cliff. They also gave us The Private Blog of Joe Cowley by Ben Davis, which looks quite funny, and Replica by Jack Heath, which I was looking forwards to reading before and didn't know it had been picked up in the UK.  We also got a notebook and...

Theatre Review: This Much by John Fitzpatrick, performed by Moving Dust

I am aware that my timeliness is terrible. I saw this show eight months ago, I wrote this review eight months ago, I found it again tonight.   I saw it at Edinburgh, and it's now playing at Soho Theatre as part of the Pride festival.  Title: This Much (or A Act of Violence Towards The Institution of Marriage) Writer: John Fitzpatrick Director: Kate Sagovsky Performed by: Moving Dust Cast:  Lewis Hart, Simon Carroll-Jones, and James Parris Seen at: Zoo City Review: Gar is in a long term relationship with Antony, and they're thinking about marriage , but meets Albert on an app. This leads to a romantic drama exploring the meaning and importance of marriage. I saw this in the programme. I loved the title and the picture and thought maybe if I have time. I then saw this being promoted on the Royal Mile- three men in wedding dresses standing on plinths- and thought, yes, I have to see this. I didn't really know about the play though. The drama progresses well. Something's...
